Cam question

One more question about my 77 Firebird. It has the 350R engine, the Olds 350. I put an Edelbrock Performer-Plus cam in it. It has a stock turbo 350 and stock torque converter.

How fast should this engine idle with this cam? At .050, the intake lift is .280, exhaust is .295 at the cam. At the valve, the lift is .448 and .472.

I have it idling about 800 or 850 rpm but when I put it in reverse or drive, it will only idle a few seconds then die. I don't think I have any vacuum leaks. How should I set the idle on this car now with the new cam? The engine only had about 40 or 45 mins on it so it's still a little tight, I'm sure.

Thanks, Kerry Finally making progress on the 77 Firebird!

Almost forgot. Duration is 204 deg. intake, 214 deg. exhaust at .050 lift.

Can you link to some pictures of this thing? It's a weird duck, I remember decoding the VIN and other codes for you...

Yes, I know it's a legit vehicle, I'm the one that decoded it. LOL!

Certainly! Yes, it's a "strange bird", the vin comes out to be an Esprit so somebody has apparently rebuilt it. My daughter has pictures of it on her old web site. Here are 2 links:

This was last fall, shortly after we got it. I think it's the wrong bird for a '77 but it looks ok. If I decide to do some body work and a paint job, I'll probably put the right one on it but I'm not in any hurry to do that. After this overhaul, I'm ready for a break! Speaking of which, I'm putting on a new right-front brake caliper Tues. nite. Then I'll drive it to work for a few days before I turn it back over to her.

Thanks, I'll tell her you said so! I can't complain, she's more into cars more than most of the guys she knows, she's done some of the work on this project.

I recorded the car running with my PDA, maybe I'll convert it to an MP3 and see if she wants to post it to her web site. It sounds GREAT.

Its nice to see some women getting involved with cars... Its rather attractive. I have gotten so sick oof talking to women that get stranded, usually because of a flat tire or something trivial, and most don't know what a spare tire is, not to mention where it is or how to change it. "Oh, thats what my b/f is for" Or "I am too cute to worry about that.. some guy will help me" Grr.. sorry.. enough rambling from me.

I hear you on that.. my gf is going through for her Class A mechanic licence up here. She did a complete rebuiild on her 73 Mach One all by her self essentially LOL then I ll have someone to help rebuild the 80 Bird and it gives us a hobby to do together

Very cool! Yeah, my '88 is stored up at my ex's house.. shes really interested ini helping me tear it apart and learn something. She knows how to change her oil now. :-) Shes willing to learn, thats all that matters to me. So congrats to your g/f on her accomplishments, keep encouraging her.. and gooodd luck with the 'bird.

Thanks, had an 87 GTA with the 350 and T tops and this 80 so far is much more fun to work on

Yep, I told her she needed to at least be able to do the simple stuff like plugs, oil, change a tire, etc. I don't expect her to be able to do an overhaul like I just did, but I also don't want her to be a helpless bimbo.

Funny, now a couple of her guy friends hang around while I'm working on it so they can help us and learn more about cars! Sometimes I think it's because she's there, but at least one guy is really interested since he's got a Camaro that needs work.

is about 45 minutes from where we live, we went to the last race and she already told me that I'm taking her to the next one. I'm not going to let her race it though... Kerry
