1998 Lumina directionals trouble

Please I need some suggestions. On my 1998 Lumina the directionals are acting up. If you engage the directionals In either direction you can hear the flasher working but the directional light in the dash and the outside directionals do not work. If you pull back like you are turning on the high beams then they will work. If you just move the lever like you are changing lanes and do not click it over then they work fine. This problem has over time got worst. Already replaced the flasher. I have replaced column switches in the past on older cars but not newer ones with air bags. Is this the answer or am I missing something? Greg

I assume that when you hear the flasher that neither front nor rear turn signal is flashing?

I strongly suspect the column switch.

Normally, bad ground connections or bad bulbs are the more common problems for turn signal indicators, but if you can get it to work by diddling with the turn signal lever, it indicates the problem is in the column switch.

Had the exact same problem with my '97 Lumina when I bought it. Pulling the lever back and all. New column switch.. My kid put a new one in. I saw him do a bit of it. Huge mass of wires in there. The switch is a circular affair. You'll have to learn how to deal with the airbag if you do it yourself. Looking at my Quicken register, the switch was $108.48. A bit over 4 years ago.
