(you will have to excusethe poor positioning, its not exact but close, within an inch or so, I nevergot my camera back untill later yesterday and I wanted them out, so I did!) Anyway, further to my recent series of threads about shaking like hell etc:

Found the problem with my serious vibration problem at 50mph (all to the dissapointment of Wifey! dont tell her I said that), was the simple problem of front propshaft uj's being completely shot, all the bearings had fell out etc.

So, pleased as punch, went to Local Landy spares man (about 8 miles away) in new toy, was even happier when an expert eye told me was a bargain.

Left with new U.J's in pocket, starts her up, pulls out onto the A52 - BANG _ REV_REV_CRUNCH.

So there I am, sat still in the middle of the A52, traffic flying at me from all directions, a possie of land rover owners shouting "youv'e snapped a half shaft, put her in 4 wheel drive, get off the road!".

So I shouts back - "I'd love too, but the props in the back" - oh shit - the stunned crowd went silent.

So, gets pushed back onto safe ground, friendly guys at TD & LC Willets (thanks guys) handover some 9/16" spanners and tell me to get the front prop off that scrapper over there. Bruce from spares kindly walks out handing me

2 halfshafts, diff gaskett etc.

I put on temp propshaft, drive home slowly.

Anyway, being informed that without doubt, it will be the longer halfshaft snapped, I decided to do the shorter one first to see how things should be assembled. So takes off the dust cap/seal thingy - haha - found the bugger of the problem - a right royal bodge job, now I am very happy, thinking its going to be a quick halfshaft change without the diff coming out.

If you click the above link (ignore the seats) you will see the problem, somebody had fitted an halfshaft off something (does anybody know what it could be?), cut it to the right length, and then because of the lack of splines, welded it to the driving flange - is it me or was that ten times harder than fitting a new standard one?

Anyway, the saga continues, I notice quite a lot of metal fillings in the oil, so decide to change the diff oil, undoes the plug, the oil kinda drips out, so putts finger in hole to feel around, mmm, whats this? Pokes about - crown wheel there - but whats this bit? Manages to pull it out, its 2/3rds of a gear - bollocks! - see photos again

The really weird thing is, id driven this machine about 140 miles in total without a single noise/grumble from the diff!

So goes to local Autojumble on Sunday, finds a Diff (£30, is that the going rate?) refitts it, all is well again, Ive learnt a mega lesson though - only use free wheeling hubs to dissconnect front drive!

Well wifeys happy with me - I wish, total weekend playing with landy!

Thanks for the pics. The seats look like they're fitted as far back as they'll go. How much leg room is left with the seats fitted? Jon

Jon

I would guess at approx 3', yes the seats are almost touching the back door, but it is a SWB.

3' or 3"? Is that including the mesh guard thats in fron t of the seats? Would you be able to sit in one of those seats without major surgery? Jon (1972 SIII swb)

I think, looking at the pictures, that someone has previously snapped the shaft, welded a 3"piece of rod on, and welded this to the drive flange. A right mess. That extra wide bit in pic 974/978 doesn't look original, I suspect that is a joint.

Hmm. It probably flew apart when the halfshaft snapped, although it's not one of the gears that the halfshaft fits into, which is interesting. I expect the shock unloading of the diff has caused it to fracture, although it may just have been a matter of time before it went.

Jon,

it is 3' not 3" but that is a maximum, but yes up to the dog guard although that is close to the front of the tub.

I will try and sit in one tonight for you!, im 6'3" and not a lightweight so should be a good measure.
