Re: Discovery 200TDI alarm problem

Nick,

Thanks for posting the results of your investigations - it may help unravel an alarm mystery on my 200TDI Disco. Will have a look this weekend.

I've just found the problem. From the battery positive terminal there are 3 wires, the heavy duty red cable to the starter motor and 2 smaller diameter brown cables. Both of these run alongside the offside inner wing. One of them continues around to the nearside but the other splits into 4 smaller cables, and each of these is then crimped and soldered to 4 larger diameter cables before going through the bulkhead. All of the joins had corroded to some extent, similar in appearance to what you sometimes see on a dry battery terminal, and one join just disintegrated in my hand as I removed the insulation tape. This turned out to be the live feed to the central locking, and perhaps the alarm. Anyway I cleaned up all the joins, and made a new soldered join where necessary, and hey presto - everything now works as it should. It's fortunate that this happened on the driveway, looking at the joins on these cables it could have happened at anytime. If you've got an older Discovery, mines 1992 vintage, I'd check the condition of these cable joins and clean/renew as necessary.

Thanks

Nick

Went to use the car today, pressed the single button fob- nothing (no > flashing indicators either), tried the spare fob, still nothing (good > batteries in both). Opened door with key - central locking didn't work. > Alarm was armed when car was last used but it didn't go off, yet when I try > to start the engine - nothing ! . The alarm still appears to be

functioning

to some extent as the immobiliser is apparently working, yet the horn > doesn't sound and the central locking isn't working. Checked the main bank > of fuses - all ok, are there some auxillary fuses elsewhere? Any help > appreciated. > > Thanks > > Nick > >
