No screen wash jets, no intermittent wipe

01 Micra The intermittent wipe has stopped working. And the screen wash jets don't work. Other wiper functions work OK:

  • Push up for manual wipe -- works OK

  • Click down once for intermittent wipe -- nothing happens
  • Click down twice for constant wipe -- works OK
  • Twist for rear wiper -- works OK
  • Pull for screen wash -- nothing
  • Push for rear screen wash -- nothing

Any ideas? I thought I had maybe blown a fuse either trying to use frozen screen wash, or driving around on intermittent wipe if the wipers were frozen to the windscreen. But there is just a single 20A "Wiper" fuse in the cabin. And the wiper motors seem to be working OK.

from the description it may be the wiper switch itself. you need to do some electrical checks: check for power and earth at the washer pump, usually there will only be an earth, then see if the switch actually supplies power to the pump, if it doesn't then the switch is the likely fault.

The last Micra I drove had a separate fuse for the washer pump & it would blow if you used them when the nozzles where frozen.

Thanks, That's probably what has happened, given the weather. I'll have to try to find out what fuse is used for the washer pump, as it's not listed on the fuse box lid in the cabin.

according to autodata the front wash wipe system fuse is F23, which is third row fifth one down, it also does door mirrors

Thanks for your reply. The Haynes manual says F23 (10A) is rear wash/wipe, F24 (20A) is front wash/wipe. But if these fuses were blown, the wipers wouldn't work at all would they?

The Haynes manual doesn't mention a fuse for the washer pump.

There's a reason it's known as the Haynes Book of Lies. They can be invaluable, but are definitely not infallible.

I'd suggest checking F23 and F24 at least.

Correct.

Most likely fault is the switch, as Mr C said.

Haynes and Autodata are in agreement over fuse assignments.

Neither does Autodata, so it seems fairly safe to say there isn't one.

Thanks. It sounds like I might have two separate problems. The intermittent wiper not working, maybe due to a fault in the switch. And the screen wash pump not working for some reason. First of all, I'll check all the fuses in the cabin. Also clean out the screen jets. Maybe they are just blocked, but I don't hear a pump going when I try them.

The intermittent wipe and screenwash pump are often related in unobvious ways, because using the screenwash usually uses the intermittent wipe relay to activate the wipers temporarily.

For example, in my car, a fault in the front screenwash switch left the front screenwash working normally, but the rear screenwash switch triggered the front wipers for a few seconds rather than the rear screenwash!

Duncan was right, there is a separate washer fuse for the Micra.

It's marked 10A ACC WASH. Presumably replacing this will cure all my ills.

there are three wiper fuses, f9, f19 and f23

9 is the rear washwipe 19 the frontwipermotor and relay 23 the front washwipe

If it's the same as the Nissan Primera then one fuse powers the washer pump and the wiper amp which controls the wiper relays and the intermitent bit. The other wiper fuses protect the wiper motors. Trevor Smith
