94 Maxima A/C question.

hi new to group

question, how long will an A/C loose its charge ,in the case that theres a Leak??

i found some oil /dirt on the A/C aluminum tube going to the firewall... although it look like its been there for while. havent really looked at that part ever..

inspecting the hose/tube ,there was oily stuff near the firewall where the tube/hose come down. ..I recently cleaned it , and waiting to the oil to come back , but found none.... turning "on" A/C for about 10min...

A/C worked yesterday tested it..even though its like 30 degrees in NY, i can tell from the COOLNESS from the air with/without A/C turned ON...turns Real cold when A/C is ON vs to average cool on fan only

is it posible ,slow leak?? but its been like 3 weeks now since i realize that Oily stuff.. should it have leak ,all refrigirant already by this time??

any help thanks in advance ric

The answer to your question is that it really depends on the size of the leak. Could be months, could be days. Most leaks occur where there are seals (pipe fitting o-rings, compressor seals), or in rubber hoses. Leaks in the condenser or evaporator are not uncommon either.

Could the oil you found be from something else? Not having a leak detector, the water and soap (detergent) bubble method is an alternative to check for leaks.

Good luck!
