205 GTI oil problem

Hi all,

Long time no post... Well here's my problem ( and some will say its my oil that's to thin ? ), basically my little Peugeot 205 Gti 1.6 seems to be using more oil than it should. I run it on fully synthetic Castrol RS oil. The engine was flushed and a new oil filter was fitted when the oil was changed. Now I've sold the bike ( winter ) and I'm using the car more I've noticed it uses more oil than I would like. I've had the car for nearly 3 years now.. it doesn't smoke when you drive it, it doesn't smoke when you start it, it doesn't smoke when you take you foot of the throttle at speed... or under acceleration... it doesn't smoke at all... it smells a little but not a lot... The car runs really well and is very fast for what it is... the only other mods to the engine are a Piper induction kit and a Group 'n exhaust...? Is my oil to thin, and if so what should I run it on..? Magnetic ..?

Thanks Paul

What do you class as too much oil ??? are we talking about a pint every thousand miles or more?

Castrol Formula RS is a fully synthetic 10/50w oil, designed for multi-valve and turbo engines, Your engine is neither of these (I hope), but it should be ok.

Does it smoke if you leave it ticking over for 5mins then blip the throttle?

If it does then the valve stem oil seals are on the way out They are the first thing that goes on the old xu block - went on my goodwood so I had the top end refurbed

Also check for an oily residue on the top of the water in your radiator Head gasket could be leaking oil into the coolant

Is there any oil underneath? On my girlfriends XU oil pours out of the camshaft oil seal, and a bit from the sump gasket. Really should fix that :)

Im not so sure on how quickly it uses it, it just seems that for the mileage i do...around 1200 miles a yeah, and it seems to use 4L of oil... or at least needs topping up ? there are no signs of oil underneath or around the sump gaurd...?

I filled it up with some new oil the other day, and Im gonna keep a check on it... as its baffleing me..

a) I presume you mean 12K miles a year? and b) 4L or topping up, which is it? lol.

Best, as you say, to get better idea of how much it uses. To give you an estimate my 2ltr turbo (petrol) was using max-min in 2K miles when the turbo oil seals blew. Thats too much lol. With new turbo im using nowt, nada, zip. Engines done 100K hard miles.

I mean 1200 miles per yeah, Im lucky in the sense that i walk to work each day as its only a mile away. So the car is only for recreational use.. so hence very low milage... I was told the maximum oil capacity was 2.5L...? is that not right ?

As thats all ive been putting in... it seems to use .5L in about 300/500 hard miles..?

Hello,

For both 1.6 and 1.9 I've got 5L with filter, or 4.5 without filter.

Far too much, for XU engines, it's up to 1L/1000km (or 1L/620 miles).

Thats cool to know...

When I said .5L per 300/500 miles I meant point 5.. so 1/2L so its not to bad then...

I guess the problem comes from under filling it all the time.

Hi,

Oops, I guess I saw the point, and haven't got it :-) Yeah .5L/500 miles is correct, it's up to 1L/1000km anyway.
