Rover 75 transmission problem - any ideas?

My almost 3 year old Rover 75 2 litre CDT diesel has developed a slight clunk noise in the transmission when I change up and down the low gears. A local garage put it on the ramp and showed me quite a bit of free movement in the front wheels when the car was in gear signifying a flywheel or clutch problem.

The garage said they'd need to have the car in for investigations. They said it'll mean removing the gearbox to get at the clutch to find out what the problem is so they can order the correct parts.

They rang a contact with knowledge of Rover 75's who apparently described the problem in technical terms and said whatever it was (I didn't understand what they said) was a common problem in Rover 75's (although investigations are necessary to confirm the problem)..

So I can have a bit more clout when talking to the garage when they tell me they need to spend a small fortune on my car, does anyone know if clutch faults are common and if so, can you describe the specific fault that usually develops.

My local garage have done some ringing around their contacts who tell them that my problem is likely to be that I need a new mass flywheel. Does the term "mass flywheel make sense, have I got that right? They said something about the fact that this design of flywheel is supposed to give a better ride. Apparent;ly, it's well known that they tend to deteriorate after about

30,000 miles on the Rover 75 and on other makes of car that have this flywheel design.

The bad news is that the replacement part is £350 and a day's labour so I'm staring at a bill of something like £700 - 800! They said either bring it right away or it's OK to keep driving it around locally for a while as long as I'm not pushing the car too hard, then bring it in when it gets worst.

Has anyone had this part replaced? If so, what did it cost you?

Apparently they cause problems in the Rover

Peter, I suggest you take a surf over to the 75 and ZT Owners Club:

which is part of mg-rover.org(http://www.mg-rover.org). Some there is bound to be able to help. Also if you can get hold of a copy of the current issue of Car Mechanics they have a feature on changing a 75 diesel clutch (they are doing 10 parts on the 75 - this is part 2).

Peter,

Also you could join the Rover 75 group on Yahoo; some very knowledgeable folks there too. Go to my web-site

and you'll find the link on the front page. Andy J.

Andy - I've joined the Yahoo group myself (and It's not very active), but I can't ever seem to get to your site?

On my browser

formatting link
tries to go to http://85.210.30.187:801/and it fails with a 'page cannot be displayed' 'Cannot find server' error. I've tried just http://85.210.30.187 and although that seems to try to gosomewhere it must be timing out with the same error.

I once took my car in with the same problem, they tried to sell me a new tranny, it turned out the fluid was low.

That's odd Minty. The site is actually on a machine in my loft and as it's rebooted itself recently the IP address is now 81.210.46.50:801 That won't matter though, the DNS forwarding updates automatically, all you need is the address. I've just checked everything and there's no reason I can see that you can't access it. I've even rung a friend and asked him to look, no problem either. I'd be really interested to know why you can't access it but this isn't the place to discuss it so drop me an e-mail on adjenkins*at*uboot.com if you wouldn't mind.
