Advice request re: whining noise from 1987 Saab 9000 auto

Hi,

I've just taken my car to the local Saab service centre and been told that a whining noise from under the bonnet is due to a noisy/faulty automatic gearbox pump (the guy just popped the bonnet with the engine running and gave an instant diagnosis, saying he's come across it before). The part will cost £575 and there's about 10 hours of labour involved, bringing the price for the job close to the value of the car.

He said that he's known cars sound like that but never get any worse, even after five or six years. I have to take my family to France in it on Friday, and he recommended going ahead without a repair, and making sure I have good breakdown cover. He said that getting the part would take more than a week anyway.

Anyone have any advice? Could it be at all dangerous to drive it as it is? Should I just ignore it until it packs up, in the hope the hope that it doesn't?

Many thanks for any thoughts,

Jez
