Toyota like Audi--Pedal Confusion

'U.S. finds driver error in some Toyota crashes'

The Globe And Mail, Report On Business, (from Wall Street Journal staff), Wed. July 14/2010

U.S. DOT re 'sudden acceleration' (Toyotas) at time of crash 'throttles wide open and brakes were not engaged.' 'findings don't exonerate Toyota from known issues of sticky pedals and floor mat problems.'

'findings are consistent with 1989 study of sudden acceleration involving Audi 5000 sedans.'

Pedal Confusion... a phrase beget by the Audi fiasco.

Thanks for that. I for one can not understand why people don't post the link to the actual article as opposed to some abbreviated form on some questionable source as I often see. So it comes down to people who aren't competent drivers "doing themselves in" and then suing (one would hope unsucessfully) for their mistake. Lovely. Perhaps all new drivers should be required to use a mandatory standard transmission for their first 5 years of driving.

Because I read (actually skimmed) it in the newspaper, (which I noted above). What do you want?... it delivered to you on a silver platter?... Have you seen the price of silver lately?

When I saw "AUDI"... oh well there it is... "Pedal Confusion", which I have been suspecting for 8 months.

"Pedal Confusion" is well known to the insurance industry and to automotive engineers. Search the archives of Car and Driver magazine for more info on "Pedal Confusion". They wrote articles about the Audi fiasco 25 to 35 years ago. That's when I learned about "Pedal Confusion". There is an important component that goes along "Pedal confusion"... it's called "panic".

And demonstrate competence in a technique called "heel and toeing". Search "Bob Bondurant" for more info re "heel and toeing", if necessary.

Wrong pedal apply probably explains alot of the issues. I just wonder if the throttle pedal/sensor recall is going to fix the rest. I am convinced and certain that the wreck involving the CHP guy was not a wrong pedal deal. Ben

Well, stating the paper is rarely if ever the same as a link - simply because there can be hundreds of articles on an online edition.

Along with borderline driver competence.

I'm well aware of what it is - I'm a F1 fan - in your city BTW. I live in Ottawa as well. The best example IMHO is during the Monaco race in the movie Grand Prix.

I don't know about that. There was quite a bit not there with them if you follow me.

It wasn't. It was a floor-mat deal. The CHP cop was a moron, unlike the previous driver of that dealer-loaner car.

I posted all the details of this incident, several times, months ago.

You've never heard of "exact phrase search"? Then buy the newspaper (that I cited) for Christ sakes. Can't buy the paper because it's now old? Go to the local library.

Did you search the C+D archives for the articles?

I said "if necessary".

My city? You don't know what city I live in (or town, or village, or country, etc.). You see a domain and you assume the person lives in the area of the domain location. Do you assume everyone with a Gmail domain lives down the road from Google in Mountain View California?

Ottawa, Ohio? Ottawa, Illinois? Ottawa, Kansas? Ottawa, Michigan? Ottawa, Iowa?

Ya... but have you ever done it? Can you 'left foot brake' a manual transmission front wheel drive car?

Considering the number of motorists, I would imagine the percentage to be quite low.

I'd have to get an opinion from a traffic cop or licence tester. I know no other way to know properly. We have a show up here called "Canada's Worst Driver". A *lot* of fat idiots on that show. A lot of people that speed and just don't give a damn too.
