windshield wipers

I know this question isn't really restricted to Toyota but I ask here because its on my Corolla.

I changed the wipers about a 8 months ago and it squeeks and streaks now and annoys my wife when she uses them. (it's not all that bad as it just passed state inspection last week but I know it's annoying none the less)

Is there a product that is good for cleaning the blades and will this work to eliminate the squeeks and streaks? Or is there a particular brand of wiper that lasts several years which will not streak or squeek like my present set. And can you buy these on line?

Buy OEM refills. They're about $5 each and do not squeak.

I just replaced my wipers after 8 months, too. Turns out that I've driven about 30,000 miles in the last 8 months.

It also helps to really clean the windshield thoroughly. I use brake cleaner and 00 steel wool with VERY light pressure to clean the film off the windshield. I also spray the brake cleaner on a rag and wipe the rubber on the blade - you'd be amazed at how dirty the rag gets! Something like Bon Ami might also work well at getting the film off the windshield.

Brake cleaner? Bon Ami??? Ray, what're ya thinkin'!!!

(Actually, we use bug&tar/adhesive remover and 00 to remove any remants of stickers...)

BTW, apply the brake cleaner and Bon Ami to a rag or paper towel and then use on the glass. That way you don't have brake cleaner all over the place and Bon Ami OD on the glass.

The brake cleaner was my experiment. I figured that most of the grime on the glass is oil/diesel/road tar deposits so I tried it. You would be amazed at how black the rag gets when you wipe it on a window that appears clean. Even more amazed at how black it gets when you wipe the rubber blades.

The detail shop in Revere, MA waxes the windows so they are nice and shiny but I suspect that stuff really streaks.

I've also tried Rain-X, works well but too much work to re-apply.

Thanks to all who replied.

I went ahead and used some vinegar to clean the blades and window tonite. It seem to work pretty well tho I'm not sure how long this will last.

I noticed that no matter how many times I wiped the blades clean, a lot of black was still coming off of them so I stopped thinking maybe I was eating into rubber tho the blades felt ok to my touch. Just wanted to play safe.

If you keep at the blades, they will eventually come clean.
