VW Mexico Engines or ??? Recommendations

greetings

My motor is on it's last legs--smoking chimney-like and it will be needing replacement soon. The local shop has a new VW Mexico longblock in the box, but I read somewhere on the internet (so it's gotta be true! :) that these motors use cast rather than forged parts. Is this really true? Do these engines last/are they reliable? Would I be better off with a rebuilt or a rebuilt with a new case? I currently have Kadrons and these will go on whatever motor I get, if this makes any difference. Also if I were to get a

1776 and had the Kadrons, is this a reliable combination or will I be constantly screwing with it other than the regular 3000 mile maintenance? Thank you all in advance for your advice.

I havr three of those engines now and they run fine. I put near 50k on a Westfalia with a Mexican long block and no problems.

Mexican engines use cast cranks. However, these are lighter than forged, so have less reciprocating weight, and therefore not a problem.
