1992 Volvo 740 NON TURBO wagon - Interference or Non-Interference Motor

I have a 1992 Volvo 740 NON TURBO wagon. It has 210,000 miles on it and I keep it in great shape. The timing belt was last changed about twenty thousand miles ago.

However today the timing belt broke as my wife was going about thirty miles an hour. Everything just stopped and she was left at a dead stop in the middle of an intersection.

Before I listen to what the mechanic has to say I'd like to know if my

1992 Volvo 740 non turbo wagon has a *non interference* engine. It's my understanding that if it *-does-* no damage has been done to the engine.

I'd read on the internet that 1992 was the last year Volvo made non interference engines. I'm hoping beyond hope that's accurate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It depends on what engine is in it. The 8 valve engine is non-interference, though the clearance is much tighter than the turbo motor and there is some chance of contact if there is a lot of carbon buildup. The 16 valve engine is interference and major damage is nearly certain. IIRC both were available that year.

I'll defer to Mr. Sweet to correct me but I think you have it backwards in that it may have been the last year for the "interference" engine (B234F).

Thanks to all this group for the always helpful information,

The B21, B23, and B230 are non-interference. The B234 is interference, as are the "whiteblock" engines used in the later cars. A good rule of thumb is that if it has more than one camshaft, it's an interference engine.

It's diffrent between 2.0 B200F or 2.3 B230F, B230F is non interference, but smaller B200F is interference.

I would worry why the belt broke after such a short life .If you haven't got

I would check the tensioner for wear and damage, as well as the sprockets, and make sure everything was put together right. Could have been a defective belt, but I haven't yet run into one.
