2000 Passat Wagon Plastic Oil Pan protector

Hi all,

Has anyone out there had trouble with this plastic cover? Mine has crappy mounting parts and it just fell off (partially) recently after an oil change. Yes, I did the oil change, and noticed the plastic pan mounts were in bad shape, so it's my fault.....

Has anyone upgraded this thing with better mounts? Also, is this thing necessary? Useful?

Thanks for you comments,

Mike

There's nothing wrong with the design as long as all the clips are put back on!

Ah, disagreement here. My pan cover fell off in the front. My mechanic replaced the mounting screws during an oil change. The original screws were crappy.

Someone may correct me, but I think this is more of an aerodynamic shield (regulating air flow around the engine, and at the same time protecting it from excessive moisture and dirt) than an oil pan protector.

My wife once had a Jiffy lube start to change the oil on my Passat. After they spend 15 minutes trying to figure out how to get to the oil plug and apparently braking parts in the process, she had them put things together as best as they could, and drove away without the oil change. At least they did not empty the transmission fluid - rumors have it, a common mistake Subaru owners encounter.

Ah, disagreement here again. The hardware is not the true source of the problem, but rather the hardware being installed wrong, or even better, in the wrong location. The running gag at our shop is when we see the hardware jammed in the wrong location is bet what color the oil filter will be.

I would have to say 99.99% of the Passat bellypan problems I've seen has been caused by simple human error, and not a hardware problem. It is a simple system and it works.

I hear ya!!

My only complaint is on the Jetta, the two screws for the rear most shield that are hidden under the overlap of the front most shield.
