Is there a special tool for removing the "wheel bearing retaining nut" on an 89 4wd sub.

yes
it looks like a deep socket with four tangs projecting on the inner front edge, these tangs engage the nut
available a NAPA, CarQuest, PartsPlus and probably in the Rent-A-Tool program at AutoZone
not terribly expensive, mid 20's when I bought it a few years back

yes, now 17.95 at auto zone. 1/2 " drive socket. john
