You don't need to if you change it reasonably quickly. There's obviously a second 'battery' to store the memory.

Thank's, but the old battery was already empty so the memory was already gone.

It may have been too flat to operate things but should have had enough 'charge' to maintain the memory. Unless it was a long time unused spare key.
