94 540i BMW transmission issue

I am told I have a sealed transmission meaning no dip stick. You can access a filler hole if you put the car on a lift. It has a A5S 560Z transmission. It drives like it needs oil. A new transmission installed with 2 year warranty quoted to me was $4600 dollars. Or find a used one somewhere, or possibly is does need some oil in it. 150,000 miles on it. I sure like this car. What do I do?

and search for "kirt" or post your prob there... best site for that issue. Kirt is the tranny god of the 540, he will set you up. call him directly, his # is there. he sells parts and will give you the info you need. reach me at sharkmanbmw at hotmail dot com

I had my valve body rebuilt for $700. DO NOT FLUSH OUT THE system whatever you do. change the filter and any oil that comes out during that procedure, refill and go. if it still is not right, then you have bigger issues.

did you get the "TRANS PROGRAM" error??? if yes, that is whgy the car is slow, you are stuck in 3rd gear whenever it says trans program.

go to bimmerinfo and post, there is a 540 every week with the same probs.

it could cost you less than 1000 if you get to the right place, thje dealer will ONLY replace it. They don't know how to fix anything, just swap parts until it works!

If you only add fluid and it works, be grateful!

you need a valvebody rebuild kit.. look on the BMW forums on the web and find Kirk...The Valvebody kit plus pan gasket costs $100 from Kirk.

The problem is a little check ball that wears out.

The kit was all ZF stuff. Came with good instuctions. That was my project last thanksgiving. Took the valve body out and cleaned it after work. put the new parts in the next day after work. Put it back in the car on Thursday morning and has been great ever since.

The only problem I had was finding the Shell fluid. ZF dealers have it in 20 liter containers. My local BMW dealer would only sell me a 55 gal drum.. needless to day they will not be seeing any of my business.

I had saved the fluid that I drained out, since it was still nice looking and the pans was clean, I put it back in. I used Redline synthetic AT4 to make up the I liter I spilled or cleaned of the parts and valvebody.
