Steering wheel groaning

2001 325 iT: When pressure is put on the steering wheel, as in a slow turn, for instance, the steering makes groaning sound. Any thoughts?

Low power steering fluid level ...

Others said to check your fluid. If the level is correct the filter in your reservoir is probably clogged. It cannot be changed or adequately cleaned. Buy a new reservoir for about $20 US.

Thanks, Bob, Scott and Jeff for the advice.

Unfortunately, it wasn't low fluid; the $$$ pump had to be replaced. Luckily, it wasn't the rack.

Ouch, been there done that one before :( Did it progressively make more and more noise before it went or was it a surprise incident?

Everyone, if you haven't done so already, always take regular peeks at your brake fluid, powersteering fluid, coolant, and if you have time, the differential as well (albeit a bit more of a pain and mess to check :( )

oh and obviously oil :D
