timing issue

Jul 04, 2006 3 Replies

I installed my distributor and I am having problems. All the marks are correct. The harmonic is at zero, the valves on #1 are closed and yet when I drop in the distributor and turn over the engine and pull the cap off the dist. is out 180 degress. So I do everything the same again, the harmonic, the #1 cylinder valves. Turn the engine over and again it's out 180 degrees.

Forget about the valves being closed. You need to know that the #1 piston is at TDC and the timing mark is at zero before you drop the distributor in.

The valves will be almost closed on the top dead center stroke of the exhaust stroke other than the overlap of the cam. If you have the valve cover off turn it over watch for intake valve to open, after it closes when the piston comes up to TDC it is ready to fire. Put the dist in then on number one and fire it up.
