1985 S-10 Diesel turn signal gremlins.

The symptoms:

Left turn signal works fine, both ends.

Right turn signal inop, or flashes very dimly, but can hear the flasher clicking.

Turn filaments on both ends blink very dimly.

If I turn on the headlights I get marker lights on both ends, and the rear turn filament lights up dimly.

If I turn on the right turn signal with the headlights on then turn filaments on both ends light dimly but do not flash, and the indicator comes on brightly.

Now for the real wierdness.

I discovered this by accident. With the key off, if I turn on the headlights, or even just the parking lights, and turn on the right turn signal it makes the whole ignition bus flash. And I mean the _whole_ ignition bus including the glow plug controller.

If I have the engine running with the lights and right turn signal on, then turn the key off, the engine keeps running until I either turn off the lights or turn off the turn signal. The rest of the electrical system seems to die quietly, but the engine keeps running.

The grounding wires for all of the turn signal light fixtures seem to be good. I have not been able to test them with a continuity light or a multimeter, but the wires look in good condition and have clean grounding points.

My mechanic said it could be either the turn signal switch or the headlight switch. I have tried replacements for both switches to no effect. I suppose the next candidate is the ignition switch, but replacing that is a job I REALLY don't look forward to.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Please help before I pull out a: my hair, and b: my entire electrical system.

Hi!

Alright...this is a guess at best. And it's probably wrong...but what the hey.

I had a trailer that was giving me fits with a similar problem. The lighting had never worked on it, so I had quite a time getting it to work. The bulbs would behave "incorrectly" similar to what your truck's lights are doing.

Ends up the bulbs were "position sensitive" and put in upside down. I turned one (maybe both, but I don't recall...this has been a few years...) around and all was well once again.

I don't think the bad behavior of the trailer lights affected the host truck's lighting system though. Nor did it make the engine stay running.

Just curious, but I'd like to know: Are you ever going to send the rest of the pictures of your Diesel S-10?

It does have a towing harness in it, but all of the wiring for that seems to be in order, and I haven't used it in over a year, anyway.

Oh heck, I thought I'd already sent all of them to you. I'll find what I did with them and resend them if you like.

Hi!

That's not quite what I was getting at.

I've never noticed any "bulb position sensitivity" in any of my trucks, but I'm wondering if a bulb could be in the wrong way around on the truck's own lighting system and causing problems...just like the bulbs were in the wrong way on my trailer.

I've got a lot of the engine and some of the front "Diesel" logo, as well as the additional Diesel logo you made. You were going to take some of the whole truck as well some of your other Diesel vehicles.

Thanks!

The bulbs position pins engage in tracks in the sockets in such manner that if you try to put them in backwards they won't seat.

I'll get them out to you as soon as I find what I did with them. Either that or I'll just go take some more.
