99 S-10 transmission

My 1999 Chevy S-10 (4 cyl.) has a problem. After about 15 to 20 miles of highway driving, the transmission slips from high gear down, then resumes back to high. However, occasionally, it does not return to high gear and drives at high rpm a gear lower than it should.

Anyone have any thoughts?

How much do the RPMs go down? 3-400 or 1000-1200? IE is it the lockup dropping out or is it truly down shifting?

It does not have a takometer, so I'm not entirely positive of the RPM loss, but I am pretty sure it is downshifting one gear. It generally slips and returns at speeds of 55-60 mph.

probably torque converter is unlocking

when it does this thing (engine speed jumps up) shift it from OD to 3 and see if the engine speed increases again

yes = TC problem no = it was already in 3rd
