Asro van charging problem

My son has a 94 Astro that wasn't charging & he took it to auto zone & they sold him an alternator,he put it on & it still doesn't charge! It has 175K on it but still runs strong, does anybody know a common problem with these to look for? He's checked his wires & can't seem to find any broken & tested his fusable links. Any ideas will sure help. Thanks,Bob

I had a similar problem with my 88 S10. The ECM wasn't working properly (really funky) and none of the gauges worked. I suppose you would have mentioned this, but is anything like that happening?

good advice

the voltage to turn on the regulator in the alternator comes thru the 'gauges' fuse

How did you determine it was not charging. Did you put a voltmeter on the battery? It should read about 14 volts when the engine in running. If it says about 12 there is a problem.
