My 4.3L S-10 goes through distributor caps in about 90 days. The plug wire contacts inside the cap seem to get very badly burned and the truck starts to miss and backfire. A new cap solves the problem for a brief time. Any suggestions to why this is happening is appreciated.

And don't buy cheap ones, they do just what you are describing.

Get a Delco cap and rotor.
Have to say a word here not in alignment with Chevy. Had same problem on a VW. Parts retailer was mixing parts not compatible. Rotor was a just a tiny bit high and long for the cap. Buy both cap and rotor at same time using same OEM or equivalent manufacturer.
In addition to what's been posted already, grab the rotor and try to move it back and forth to check for play in the distributor bushing. If there is ANY play you should replace the bushing.Otherwise the rotor contacts will not meet even with the cap contacts.
