Doc - Brake Job

Doc, I had this same damn problem and posted it a few months ago. I know you are thinking "this is impossible" like we were for THREE days. I had 2 professional mechanics with over 40 years experience that are my friends with me to change a stuck caliper (no big deal.. right?) and have a few beers. One of them is a GM certified mechanic that has worked at a local dealer here for over 20 years ON BRAKES. Before it was all over we literally replaced every piece in the braking system except for the metal lines and could not get a PEDAL. In all honesty we replaced the master cylinder FIVE times and the ABS twice because there was nothing left to be wrong.

***NOTE: We had the best luck when we got the HD master even though it was not eqippped from the factory that way. Its a damn good thing these guys knew the parts people!!! We did every possible test these guys knew. It was so amazing the Goodwrench man called in sick that Monday to come back and see again what he didnt believe. On Monday evening he left, literally looking like he saw a ghost. I had no clue what to do so we bled and bled TWO GALLONS WORTH, vacuum bleeder, let it gravity feed all night even jacked up each corner... it was nothing but desperation by then and the humor was gone. We tried EVERYTHING you read in all these previous posts. On Tuesday we took everything apart and re-checked everything.. nothing was wrong and no pedal. I was about to give up myself (and do what?) so we bled one more time, we got the pedal to 75% and I took it home. Since then it has gotten better on its own but some mornings I can pump it up and it holds for days. I can swear to you I will not touch those brakes again until someone finds out what could possibly be wrong, it has to be something really bizarre. If someone told me what I just said I would not believe it and I dont expect anyone else to but I know what I saw!!! I bet you believe me now Doc!... I wish I could tell you how we got pedal but I still dont know and mines still not 100% full. Now you see how "White Devil" got its name. DOC, PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT, IF ANYTHING YOU FIND OUT ON THIS. Email me ~~> snipped-for-privacy@aol.com

This seems to be a common problem with these trucks. I have tried all the things mentioned here and in the end gave up and now just pray that when I have to hammer the binders the effin thing stops in time. I have also posted to this newsgroup asking about this and got no response. It is nice to see finally that people are as stumped as I am. I was going to sell all my tools and take up bowling but maybe just maybe there is hope.

fingers crossed xxxxx

Same here. I have done everything possible to get these brakes back. Today, out of desperation, we put a small (1/4") tack weld on the end of the booster pin. This worked for about 20 minutes, then for some reason the system re-pressurized and the truck wouldn't move. So I grinded the weld off, and it then went back to nothing, but then on the way home tonight, the peddle came back like 50-60%, I'm confused. some kind of brake boogy man running around here or sumthin. I still think it's related to the proportion valve in some way. I'm gonna try to hold the pin on the valve back and bleed again, although I KNOW there isn't ANY air in there. I have over $400.00 invested in this thing now. I bought it for $500.00.

Oh well, I think I'll go kick it and see what happens.

I changed everything on mine cause I was having the same damn problem. I got 100% of my pedal back finally after changing everything including brake lines. I did get really drunk while I did it though. Check your vacuum line going to the boost pump or whatever that damn round can is called. I had a cracked vacuum line and wound up replacing the boost pump. good luck.
