Does anyone know if you can put a flex fan on a 4.3L w/ a serpentean belt, by bolting it directly to the water pump WITHOUT using spacers, or will it not clear the belt?

Does anyone know if you can put a flex fan on a 4.3L w/ a serpentean belt, by bolting it directly to the water pump WITHOUT using spacers, or will it not clear the belt?
You are likely going to need a 1 to 1 1/2 inch spacer. Is there a reason you do not want one?
