replacing fuel pump in a 91 suburban

Hi all,

I am about to embark on a relative new project. My fuel tank in the suburban (91) is starting to leak when full. Therefore, I purchased a new tank, sending unit, pump, mounting straps, all hoses and so on. I am replacing everything. Is there any special trick to replacing the tank, pump and sender or will it all be somewhat straightforward. Since the current pump still works I though I would just pump the tank dry before removing it and using a floor jack to move it up and down. I looked over the parts and do not see any problem but I though I would ask in case anybody has done this and had an issue.

Thanks,

Mark

P.S. I had posted about a month ago about a sluggish volt gauge, I ended up replacing the module ($59.) but at least I found one. :)

Drive it till its nearly empty! All that is probably leaking is the sender seal a filler hose, or fuel line. But if you got the money and gumption, go for it! You definatly will eliminate any fuel leak...unless its the fuel line(s) from the tank!

Since everything else will be new, replace the isolators between the tank and its mount.

I have a big floor jack with some holes drilled in the top. Bolt some plywood to the top, put it under the tank, disconnect the straps and let it down a tad. Then check on top and start disconnecting stuff as you let it down. Since your fuel pump is not the problem definitely run it very low on fuel.

On some trucks the fuel lines are swaged on. Cut the swages with something that won't spark. Don't use an electric grinder. I use a big pair of diagonal cutting pliers. When you put it back up use gear clamps.

Thanks for the advice. It was only a couple hundred in parts so why not go and change everything. It appears the fuel lines to and from the tank are O-ringed fittings that you remove via a wrench so it should not be too bad to remove them. It was leaking only when full but was dripping tar onto the ground add to that the gauge is not even close to being correct and there are quite a few rust spots on the tank so I figured I might as well replace everything. I have all parts including new straps, fill/vent hoses and the rubber isolators. Thanks again for the comments.
