During the summer I installed a new 15 gallon fuel tank. Also a new sending unit. Before the install I thought I checked the sending unit for calibration. It seemed okay at the time. I thought wrong. Luckily it was in my favor. My gauge will go from full tank to empty on the needle, but at the empty mark I still have 2 -4 gallons still in the tank. I feel lucky that this is the case, but if I wanted to correct the error how would I re-calibrate the sending unit? '75 CJ5 258

13%, but 4 out of 15 is over 25%. I would want my gauge to say almost 1/4 at 4 out of 15. If you want to adjust it, you have to remove the sender and bend the arm that holds the float down a bit, so it's closer to the bottom of the tank at rest (empty). With nearly 4 gallons at empty, it gives you a false sense of hope and you will push it.... and push it... I don't want insurrance (I pay too much for that already), I want to know exactly how much is left!-- JimG

I went with the 15 gal. only because it was a direct replacement. I'd never changed a tank out before and the 20 gallon if I remember needed some modifications or some different mounts or plates. Can't remember right off hand. For the amount of trouble I went though I wished I'd done the 20.
Tonight I hit the 33 -35 mile range since I filled up and my gauge is almost a 1/3 down. I've checked the mpg and I average 13 - 14mpg. Four complete tanks. 500 - 600 miles driven. Thats both highway and in town. I think I need to rebuild the carb. Seems I should see 15 -16 mpg. I know the needle and seat have worn because I am having some hard starts after driving.
You're right with that Jim. I checked out the link that Jeepster posted and I got the info I wanted. I did check for leaks on the return line too. Found nothing. I hate it. drive 35 miles and be just above half tank. Oh yeah, when it is full it reads full then drops off fast.
On a YJ the only difference between a 15 and 20 gal tank is the length of the vent hose insert in the tank. To convert from 15 to 20 just work the thing out of the vent and cut it off.
One of the big issues with this is that 15 and 20 gal. sending units are not interchangeable. Be sure you have the right one.
