You would probably tear up the tranny Why the hell would anyone want to??
Don't most cars have a lock-out to prevent this?
The lockout is to prevent someone from shifting into Park, not Reverse. The shift lock is either one of several types of mechanical schemes including a cable or it could be electrical which means the use of a solenoid.
I'll chip in $20. if you want to try this feat and report back, I've always been curious as to what exactly happens but have never had the nerve.
I have done this on a ford 250 powerstroke while doing 45 mph, and the wheels locked up and wanted to turn backwards, I think the heavy duty drivetrain of the diesel is what saved me from big damages, and I did'nt lose control which is another plus. But I am a proponent of not trying it again. I don't think it is very good for the truck.
I did this at 65mph once! It was a total accident, the truck didn't have the gear indicator, so I would drop the tranny into neutral and then back to drive. Well, once, I missed neutral and hit reverse, and left about 200' of tire marks before I got it back into drive.
ok- i did this once on purpose with a beater 1/2 ton dodge 6 cyl, with studded snow tires,on a freshly paved road. i just threw it in reverse @
30 mph and stood on the gas.did a monster reverse j hook burnout which i stayed into till the tire spin stopped.didnt do it again, but it was fun.definately not good on the tranny,u-joints or rear axle. also jumped the railroad tracks with this bomb one night,on reentry the battery tipped over on its side in the battery tray and the fan bade removed the vent caps and sprayed battery acid all over the motor compartment. smelled to high hell too!!! i was 17 yrs old during this time of expirement BTW.UPDATED WEB PAGE:
shit all over the road!
If there is such a lockout to begin with. My mom was ribbing my brother on his driving skills while he was puttering around town. Didn't take too long and he got mad and slammed the shifter on my dad's '94 Chevy into park while doing 25 or so MPH.
From down the street I heard the grating noise as the vehicle slowed to a stop very quickly.
Never did any damage that I could tell.

I think you are correct, the shift lock is to prevent someone from turning the key to off unless the transmission is in Park. My error, I had it backwards. Thanks for the info.
