91 GC Starter Problem

I had a problem with the starter. You would turn the key and the dash lights would go dark and the starter wouldn't crank. Try it again and the starter would function fine. I figured after 113k miles, the starter had it. Replaced with a remanned unit and same problem. Cleaned all battery and starter terminal connections. Could it be a relay?

Too bad you replaced a good starter with a possibly inferior aftermarket rebuilt (I'm assuming). If the lights were dimming, then you should have figured the starter was not the problem.

Have your battery tested - perhaps it is just plain bad. If that's not it, get a multimeter and find out where the voltage drop is occurring in the string of power from the battery to the power distribution. (also check grounds for voltage "rise" (drop).

I'd assume the battery is bad and troubleshoot starting with that assumption (get battery tested - or using the multimeter, do it yourself by watching the voltage on the battery posts - the actual posts, not on the clamps attached to the posts - when you turn the key to 'start').

Too bad when he bought the starter he didn't read the service bulletin enclosed with it. TSB 08-41-95
