A/C belt squeaking - tension problem?

Question

3 liter Misubishi engine, "3" as it's identified Plymouth Voyager Minivan, 1994.

The mechanic replaced the A/C even though it was only 9 months old. That was somewhat curious.

Then he put the wrong belt on it so it squeaked a lot.

So the garage put yet another belt which made it much better. But it squeak about once or twice each time I use it. Just for a short second or less.

This is pretty good compared to before.

I noticed I can push the belt down about a thumb's length, maybe 3/4 to 1"

What is the correct tension? 1/2" ??

Can I tighten this myself? I gather I would need a long socket and extensions and some sort of rod to use as a lever?

I can go back to the garage to ask them to tighten, maybe next time they won't replace a belt that really did not need to be replaced in the first place.

Thoughts?

Got one just like u describe in the shop late tonight-each time the A/C cycles=screech for a short bit. Looked at belt tension 1/2" deflection but it appears glazed. Will put a Gates belt on it in the morning with 1/2" deflection and test drive. I asked owner if anyone has filled/topped A/C freon (in case some bonehead overcharged)-nope no one has touched the A/C. The is a 1997 model and no noise from the compressor. Wheelc what happens in the AM.

Find somebody who has a tool called a 'belt tension gauge' and knows how to use it. (Example:

This 'measuring 3/4" or 1/2"'with your thumb stuff is a Mickey Mouse approach -- there is a more preciseway to check the tension and make sure it is correct. Have them check thenew belt for glazing, I'm betting it already is glazed and needs to bereplaced. Have them also check the pulley alignment.

After is squeaks for a while the belt can get glazed and the squek gets worse and worse. Make sure they are using a quality belt (not the cheapest one the discount place has) and tightened properly. Sounds like, as you suspected, this belt was a little loose. I would have them tighten it and check for glazing.
