I don't even think that's possible. The everyday price at Advance for the Pure One (which I use) is around $6 ($5.88, to be exact, this past weekend: PL14670).

I used to see this with Fram filters on my '88 2.2L Omni. Never had a problem with Purolators. I just figured it was something peculiar about my old Omni.

A lot of early 2.2 engines died prematurely due to Fram's decision to make the inner element shorter than it should've been.

Mine was still going strong at 120K miles when we traded it in for a new '98 Neon R/T. It had had a blown head gasket and major A/C work done over the years. Of course my '98 Neon had a blown head gasket as well :-), but at least it was under the extended warranty.

I have had 3 89 sundance 2.2 engines spin the #1 rod bearing does that count, all had frams on them.
