Re: 90 cargovan

Don't know about average age, but my our (since replaced) 1990 Grand Caravan trans was replaced under the 7 year 70K mile manufacturer warranty at 48K and 6 years and 9 months. They upgraded the computer at that time as well, so you might be able to determine if this one had it done as well.

I found a 1990cargo van with the 3.3 V-6 and an Auto trans. > It has 87K on the clock and the shape of the van would support this, it was > a painters van for an old semiretired painter. > The question is is this one of the vans with a questionable tranny and if so > around what mileage do they ususally pack it in? > TIA > Mandrake >

Since it has the 3.3 V-6, I am guessing that you have the 4 speed. I don't believe that that the 3 speed was ever used with the 3.3.

Yes

Right around that mileage, unless the "severe duty" cycle (meaning fluid flushes every 2 years) has been followed (which hardly anyone followed back then as nobody knew any better)

However this shouldn't be a reason to disqualify the van. The 3.3's are excellent engines and many people have gotten 200K plus on them. Also there's been 2 major redesigns on the tranny, a new trans computer and programming, and a new valve body, as well as numerous small changes. If the tranny blows chunks a good rebuilder will update the tranny to all the latest improvements and then it's service life is no worse than any other auto tranny on the market. (in fact, better if you follow the fluid flush recommendations and install an external tranny cooler)
