Is the P38 DSE AUTO reeeeeally that slow?

Jan 28, 2009 22 Replies

I had the DSE in a manual and didn't think it was as bad as everyone goes on about, not fast, but capable of moving itself without struggling. I've seen a nice Y2000 2.5DSE for a good price, but in auto form and I'm not sure. Can't just pop over to the UK to try it! so just wondering if anyone had one and can comment.

I'm not looking to do any racing, but don't want something that can't go up hills without screaming either!

Cheers,

Matt

I want one of those, it wouldn't bother me if it wasn't a racing car.

My old P38 is in the top 2 of my all time favourite vehicles (and I've had a few!) and rediculously cheap now compared to when new. Been looking at L322's as well, but big expensive reported problems worry me a bit. At least with a P38 I'll have cash left over to fix anything needed! Plus I know the P38 pretty well and know I can get bits cheap enough, I doubt I can say the same for the new RR. If I get one I'll probably never sell it and keep it to turn into an off-roader eventually. Still weighing up a D2 Td5, but had plenty of Disco's already!

Matt

Yes pretty dreadfully slow, and the auto box hurts the mpg quite alot.

However, with a jeremy fearn intercooler and chip (and afew bits and bobs, £1500) they can be made to fly, and be better on fuel.

Tim

Which problems are putting you off the L322?

I think you may have the two models confused. The P38s reputation is such that I skipped the model completely which is saying something for a Rangie fan.

I am having hell with the PDC, it just won't work ffs.

I can understand having an in-car network, but a mobile PDC is just asking for trouble.

Sure is, but probably down to too much take home pay since you passed the exams. :-)

Colleague of mine had one. It was so bad it made me go and buy a Jeep

4.0 litre petrol.

Have you tried new sensors Nige? Manual also says to avoid jet washing in them. Mines had a couple of bennies in the 17 months I've had it but mainly when wet and sorts its self out.

Got a quote for tyres today,,, I thought he was quoting for 4! Be cheaper to et a set of rims with tyre on at this rate.

Lee D

:-)

Yeah, if only. Exams passed.. flunked the interview.. next crack at it will be around Sept I guess. Very few get through the first. Lad I work with who did pass his interview was on his 4th attempt.

Still at the moment I'm just happy to be employed!

Lee D

Well yes, that's a bonus in today's economic climate.

Oh damn, my typing hand slipped... accidently bid and won that yr2000 P38 DSE. I didn't think I'd actually hit the reserve and was going to argue over price after it finished!

Dark met. blue, 125k with FSH, 6 months T&T, and it even has a 6 month warranty! £3.5k. Sadly Auto, but if I don't like it I reckon I can take some decent photos with a good description and get around another grand on top back if I'm lucky - certainly not going to loose out. I'd set my mind on a nice 2002 face-lift Td5 Disco I'd seen as well, but never mind

- next time - couldn't pass up the P38 at that price!

Been nearly 18 months without a LR, will be great to get back into one again.

Matt

Just drive it like a clutchless manual and you might find that it grows on you!

It's not the auto box I really object to, normally I like them - I've had auto Disco 300 & V8's, and would have gone for an auto Td5, but just heard that DSE Auto P38's are tooo slow! (hence my original post!) We'll see!!

Matt

It can't be any worse than the Auto 300 TDi can it?

You could compare it to my Series2 2 1/4 diesel, then you'd be happy. :-)

That is what I don't understand. Everyone complains about the P38 diesel being slow, but it is better than the Disco 200/300 diesel's and there are no big complaints about them being painfully slow. 0-60 on a

300Tdi is 17.2s, P38 DSE is 14.3s (about the same as a Td5) Maybe it is just because it is a RR and everyone expects more from it?

On or around Sun, 01 Feb 2009 10:18:57 +0100, Matt M enlightened us thusly:

it's the comparison betweeen that and a 4.6 that's the essence of it. Stupid Italian tax laws (or somebody's, it's a 2.5l limit), it'd have made much more sense to put the 3-litre BMW lump in it.

Having said that, Bro-in-law has a (manual) one and hauls a big trailer and hasn't compalined too much about it.

You can always haul it down to 3 or 2 using the shifter - that's even sometimes worth doing on the (earlier) V8s, the ZF 4-speed can be a bit lazy sometimes, unless you boot it - On mine, under certain conditions, pulling it back to 3 makes it go faster without any extra boot application.

Yes, perhaps. Still, the BMW 2.5 was a better choice than putting a

300Tdi in it!

The Italian thing was the 2.0MPI Disco fiasco! The 3.0 BMW diesel wasn't available when the P38 came out, which I guess is why it wasn't used - it only came out around 98 in the E39 5-series as I recall.
