Austin 1100/1300

Hello,

Has anyone here got one of our favourite cars, the Austin 1100/1300 ?

What have you got?

Well, in 1982 or so, I bought an old 1100 in the hope that I could get

2 or 3 years out of it as a SWMBO-mobile. This was my only experience of the 1100. It was actually quite a nice car but this particular example was, as it turned out, well past its scrap-by date.

The most amusing thing that I recall about it was SWMBO coming home one day and telling me that it felt funny while she was driving it. Given such a clear and concise description of a car problem, I immediately set about finding the problem.

To cut a long story short, I noticed that the nearside driveshaft wheel hub splines were completely worn away, and as a result you could see the castellated nut on the end of the driveshaft spinning in the centre of the wheel while it was parked and in gear with the engine running. Not only that, but the brake caliper was broken away and detached so that it was merely attached to the disc by the backing plate. It amused me so much that I went indoors and brought SWMBO out to take a look at it.

Her reaction was completely out of the blue and unexpected. She accused me of deliberately sabotaging her car with the intent to kill her.

We were divorced within a year of that. She turned into a complete mental case and quite frankly I hope she burns in hell. Not that I'm bitter about it, or anything like that. Burn, bitch, burn.

My Dad has a 1970 Morris 1300, one owner from new, less than 40,000 miles as it has spent a lot of that time off the road while we experimented with various techniques for welding replacement sills on. My Mum had a G-reg Austin 1300 for a short time, but that was past its best before she bought it.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember Dean Dark saying something like:

You see what owing an Austin 1100 does for you.

Is this the car that's so recalcitrant it requires beating with a branch of holly?

The car really wasn't all that bad, especially considering what I paid for it.

A financial analysis of the marriage was by far more depressing than the car could *ever* have been. But I appreciate your kind condolences.
