Yes the Saab 3-cyl twostroke was superseded by the V4 [which was a German Ford design that first saw the light of day in early-'sixties Taunuses]. This continued being used until SAAB stopped making the
95/96 models in the early-1970s. The 99-series Saabs as you say used a Triumph-spawned engine which is distinctly Dolomite-ish.
