Yes the Saab 3-cyl twostroke was superseded by the V4 [which was a German Ford design that first saw the light of day in early-'sixties Taunuses]. This continued being used until SAAB stopped making the
95/96 models in the early-1970s. The 99-series Saabs as you say used a Triumph-spawned engine which is distinctly Dolomite-ish.
The 95/96 started with a 3-cylinder version of SAAB's DKW-descended
2-stroke, then got the Ford Taunus V4 round about the middle 1960s in the bull-nose models. SAAB bought into the Triumph slant-four for the new-generation 99 range.Ob.SAABs - saw a very nice early bullnose 96 last week - not seen one of the early ones in a long time (the later big-bumper versions are much more common)
Stopped importing them into the UK, you mean. The 96 (and maybe the 95?) were still in production in SAAB's Finnish plant well into the 1980s (1985 maybe?).

The Rancho did so badly they had to think up something quick to fill the tracks. Sadly the tie up with Renault meant the end of the Bagheera.
