Its for swmbo! she wants something new like a mini but id rather try to get her to fall in love with something that appreciates rather than the depreciates! she'd like something sporty in the looks department and reasonable performance. she is a big lass so a mg midget is probably a bit small! any ideas?

How much money have you got? An XK150 would be a nice car, my wife loved hers. OTOH it will cost you quite a wedge to buy and run and it's still sadly a long way behind the driving experience of (say) an MX5. If you wnat a future classic an MX5 woudl be a good buy, tough as old boots and well built. Some of the first examples are just beginning to loosen up into really driveable motors.
If you want a real classic then it depends on how deep your pockets are and how much she would be willing to compromise. I love GT6's but I don't consider them an all weather car for leadfooted drivers.
Why not consider a real chance on a future classic and get a Smart roadster?
Only one choice in my book - a big Healey - preferably one of the later BJ8's

Yyyuck! How about a Mk1 Golf GTI? Good ones still seem to turn up at normal car prices, but won't for much longer, IMO.
Did they ever work out how to make them stop? If I could bolt on some proper brakes I would be tempted to try one again!
What about an early MR2, around 1985, or a slightly later one with the T-bar "semi-convertible" roof? Only a few thou and probably very mechanically reliable even today.
On the basis that you seem to be looking at MG Midget type prices, I have a Porsche 924S (944 engine in a 924 body) in superb condition with full service history (dealer & speciallist), 90K miles (commonly do about 180K with no probs) totally reliable IME, wonderful to drive, cheap to insure (c. 150 on classic policy, 500 on normal fully comp) - I'm looking for c. 3500 - email if you are interested (remove nospamthanks)
If that's not her thing, how about a Datsun 240Z, Mk.1 Golf GTi, Lotus Sunbeam/Excel or series 4 Lotus 7 (a lot more space inside than earlier versions, but admittedly not very practical)
