Starter solenoid urgently wanted

I posted about this a few weeks ago.I need a starter solenoid for a 1966 E-Type Jaguar. The Lucas part number is 76476A. but it does not seem to be listed in any of the Lucas catalogues. I've tried umpteen telephone calls; the nearest so far was JagBreaker in Newcastle (they sell new parts as well) who recognised the number and thought they could supply from stock. Turned out they couldn't, so they ordered one from their supplier in Belgium. Part duly arrived, correct number on the box, correct number stamped on the unit, BUT... it was about half a cm too big in diameter so it wouldn't fit. Typical repro part. Thought of attacking it with an angle grinder but not sure how thick the casing is so decided against.So it looks like a breakers job. Unlikely to be many E-Types in breakers yards, but it's almost certain that the same unit would have been fitted to the XJ6 Series 1, 2 and possibly 3. These seem to turn up in banger racing quite often, so there must be some about.Various people thought it might also be fitted to the Rover SD1, but Rimmers could'nt find the part number - although as it isn't in any of the Lucas catalogues this may not be relevant. Anyone near Dorking or Horsham got an SD1 I could have a look at...?One bloke who seemed to know what he was talking about reckoned the same starter was used on all the early V8 Rollses, but I haven't been able to confirm this. I seem to remember there's a major Rolls breaker in South London, but haven't been able to track them down. Anybody know?Any help gratefully received, as the car is off the road for want of this one little part.Geoff MacK

Wasn't the Marina fitted with the same/very similar engine to the MGB? If so, do either of these look familiar? (Items 9 & 10).

The list is from the US and I'd guess the Marina is an auto - which often use pre-engage where the manual made do with inertia. Certainly at least early MGBs were inertia. But of course there were auto 1800 Marinas in the UK too. Not sure if they ever did an auto MGB.

Sadly your link gives BL part numbers. Wonder if a phone call would get the Lucas ones from them?

Thanks, Ian, I've already got them in my diary to call Monday morning. I agree - seems probable that any BMC B Sreies may be the same. I've also heard that the TR6 and TR7 may have used the same unit, but yet to be confirmed (Rimmers were completely uninterested).

As far as I can make out, the innards are all the same but the casing varies according to the car. The E is very tight for space, which is why I have to use absolutely the correct part. If there was a bit more room I could probably lash something up.

Geoff - Did you find your solenoid? I have a NOS KOR Lucas #76706 1/1971, correct for your car if you still need. RGDS....................Mick
