Water is easily broken down to hydrogen and oxygen by applying a dc current.

Actually the "lost" energy in conversion is not the problem. It is the tremendous about of electrical power that is required for the amout of hydrogen produced in this process to split Hydrogen and Oxygen bonds in water. It ake many time more energy than it releases or produces. Science has been working on solution to this riddle for a very long time and there is none yet.
