Firebird V8 question from a Newbi.

Hi folks, Im new to this qroup.

Just bought my self a Firebird Trans-am 1982/3 shape like Knight Rider.(This time last year) Ive been doing a conversion into a KITT Replica, and so far have repainted it. There is some photos of it on my website in the gallery section. Will add some more soon. Its My first Yank and first V8. Never gone past the K16 model 1.4 before.!!

My question is. The Distributor cap. the coil in cap type with the 3 prong connector and round carbon button. Can you buy just the carbon button and rubber bush.? as mines worn out. and wont start now. Ive got a spark and compresion on all 8 cylinders are around 10 bar in the green. but the darn thing wont start at all. I had it Ruff Ideling and then it just died like it sometimes does. Then it just would not start again. I thought Id blown a valve or poped the headgasket at first, but after checking the compression of each cylinder I found that it is ok. And that was a pain in the ass to do ill tell ya.!! All that size and no flamin room to move!

Ive read that there is a Pre-heater under the Carb and its controled via a relay, that is controled by the ecu. acording to my haynes. It just doesnt say were the bloomin relay is on the car. Ive not tried to back trace it yet, but any help on this none starting trouble is most welcome. The carb type is an E4ME Type acording to Haynes. And the Engine is a V8 but Im not sure which one as such. Anyone else here think that the Haynes manual does not give you enough darn information. !! :-/

Buy a new cap and rotor.

The VIN will tell you which engine was installed at the factory.

Yep, the info sucks and to top that I heard that Haynes or Clymer bought out Chiltons.

Does the Cap include the centre Carbon Pin. as this is worn down. Ive fashioned one myself out of an old motor carbon brush, but its not perfect. I thougth it might do the trick but I guess it didnt. Ive got a spark but i think its iregular. as the motor spins and then disengages as though it fired. Ive seen several verisons of cap on the market and its hard to choose the right one. Id like to keep it as standard as posible, without having to go down the modding rout. My coil is the sort with 3 wire on and 2 pin connectors the fix in the cap. Not the sort that has pointy outputs. Its got a circular hole at the base for the Bush and spring then the Carbon rod pin. Any Idea what model that is. ?

Trouble is I cant just pop it out to the local Halford to buy another matching cap.

Yes the new cap will come with the carbon pin, you should also replace the rotor as long as you are doing the cap. Whenever one gets replaced then the other needs also to be replaced as they work together as a team. You don't just change out one tire at a time, do you?

Find an AC Delco distributor and buy the cap that works with the Chevrolet V8 HEI (high energy ignition) that uses the coil in cap design.

Check out this autozone page. Your distributor is halfway down the page.

Yeah, Haynes suck...thats why I got myself a shop manual for my Formula. End result will be to do the same thing you are doing to your car.. well thats the plan.. but I'm going to tear it all down and build it so I know where there won't be any problem areas later on in life. Then I'll start looking into conversion parts.
