loose door handles - 95 Z28

Beautiful car but both door handles (exterior) are loose and rattle. Obviously I need to remove the inner door panel but what else am I looking at to tighten these handles up?

thanks

If the whole handle is moving around in the door mounting point, you may wish to Loctite the bolts/nuts (use green or blue which is service removable, red WILL make it impossible to get off) to secure them.

If the door handle is sloppy internally, that's a typical GM issue with many cars. GM's trim items have not always been that stellar in all the years :). It's not the whole assembly moving around, it's just the handle now has free play as though a retention spring is too long. I was hoping for advice on whether it is worth fixing or if it is too much of a hassle to be worth the effort. It sure would be nice to eliminate two sources for small rattles. I was looking at a Z that was only 3 years newer and there was zero free play.

I may pull a door panel off and take a look to see what the situati>> Subject: Re: loose door handles - 95 Z28

Hi,

It's the outside door handle assembly itself & probably not repairable. On my '95 Z, my handle was nice & tight until I was getting in my car in a parking lot one day. As I lifted the handle, I heard a small "ching" & felt something hit my fingers -- it was a little tension spring that *was* staked to the inside part of the potmetal handle itself. Ever since then, it's been flopping around..

When it "broke", that little spring actually turned loose & landed somewhere in the parking lot -- couldn't find it. If you lift the outside of the handle up & look underneath, you might be able to see what I'm talking about.

Soo, aggravating. I try & take such good care of my stuff & this car has had more stupid little quality issues than any of my older Camaros & GM stuff. Too bad, since the POS is pretty & fun to drive. My rear differential is on its way out now with 126K easy miles. Pathetic.

Anyway, if you are so inclined to change the handle, just wait until the power window motor gives up; it won't be long!

I can share your disgust but it goes with the teritorry. I also own a ford ranger splash. The plastic latch on the center console door was broken off when I bought the truck used. I thought it really couldn't be all that much for a simple plastic latch. After checking into the situation, the entire upholstered center console is a unit and if memory serves correctly a $300 + item. I managed a fix with a coat hanger but as you say, "Pathetic"....

LOL @ power window motor. You're not jokin' there.!! I had to replace mine @ 59,000 mi. and it looked like somebody was in there before me also. It was a mess. The bolt holes were all screwed up in the door frame and were about an inch long instead of little holes. I had to use two sets of nut/bolt per hole to keep the bolt from slipping everytime the window went up or down. I had it apart 3 times before I got it to stay in position. grrrrrrrrrr.
