Quadrajet question

The secondaries of our little '77 TA are not working, they are loose and just flop open. There's supposed to be a coil spring on the end of the shaft for the top butterflies, but ours seems to be missing. So, if you punch it hard enough to open up the secondaries, the top butterfly opens all the way and it just bogs down.

Where can I get one of those springs for the top butterfly?

I'm not sure if GM still services it, but you can try taking your carburetor # with you to any GM dealer. Have the dealer pull out the 76-81 Pontiac parts book or microfiche and go to the carburetor breakdown section. There are good illustrations in the parts books. From there, and with your tag #, the parts person should be able to dig up a GM #.

If the GM # is still good, you're all set. If not, ask the dealer to see if the part is located at another dealer (they can do a search).

If those come up dry, places like the Carburetor Shop among other Q-jet tweakers out there that advertise should have them available from various sources.

Shouldn't be too hard to get. Joe--ASE Certified Parts Specialist & 10th Ann.Club Tech Director '80 Carousel Red Turbo T/A, 27k orig. '79 "Y89" 400/4 speed 10th Ann. T/A, 57k orig '84 Olds 88 Royale Bgm 2 dr, 307 "Rocket" (lol), 143k and still going.... '91 S10 Blazer 4.3Z

I was going to suggest calling a carb rebuild shop out of the phone book. They would most likely have one. I doubt that GM dealers would still stock carb parts, I know we don't, you may find one out there though..

Most dealers won't and whatever they have is likely leftover or was ordered and forgotten about.

However, if *GM* still services the item, it doesn't matter if it's stocked or not. It can be ordered by any GM dealer and in the customer's hands in a couple of days.

Ok, thanks, I'll see if the local Pontiac dealer can get one for me. I guess I'll need to find the number off the carb to take with me, I don't remember seeing a tag on it so I'll hunt for a number on the body somewhere and see if it helps.

Thanks, Kerry

Stamped vertically on the float bowl and typically starts with "170".

Doug:

I'd double check that assumption against a parts list before stating that. LOL :) Joe--ASE Certified Parts Specialist & 10th Ann.Club Tech Director '80 Carousel Red Turbo T/A, 27k orig.
