94 Eplorer-Enginer Probelms

I have a 94 Explorer with the 4-liter V-6 with engine trouble. The engine starts and idles fine, however, under all levels of acceleration including driving under power at speed the engine hesitates and sputters causing a loss of power. When the gas pedal is released the engine calms down, but this makes merging onto the highway difficult. Occasionally the condition will cause the engine to spit back through what I assume is the air cleaner

- similar to a backfire through a carbureted engine. The are no dash board indicator lights on indicating a problem and the vehicles gas mileage has remained constant. The Ford manual lists ~20 items to check, including a myriad of sensors. I?d like to try to narrow the problem down before just starting to buy and replace parts. I?ve check this board for previous post with similar problems but found none in the past few months. Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

i had the same kinda problem, i cleaned my KN filter and, what im sure the problem was, the MAF sensor. its REALLY easy to do and many sites give proper how to.

The mass air flow sensor was one of my suspects. What is a KN filter?

it is a performance air filter offered to you by any automotive parts shop. (Canadian Tire, or any US equivalent) It adds a cleaner less restricted flow of air to your air intake. You can also clean the filter instead of throwing it out and buying a new one.

ull need a specific tool in order to get the top of the sensor off. i just went to my hardware store and borrowed the right tool, took the sensor off and cleaned it.
