Chirping noise and flexplate

I have read several posts regarding a chirping noise that seems to be associated with a cracked flexplate. Has anyone else experienced this problem. My 95xlt makes an intermittent chirping noise that I have been unable to locate for some 24+ months now. Last week I was able to get the vehicle to make the noise while in park and when I slithered underneath the car, I thought I traced the noise back to where the tranny and engine connect. Took the truck to the tranny shop and explained the problem. They kept it two days (where it still sits) and keep calling to say they drove it and cannot get the noise to appear. This is consistent with every other of the 6 or 7 trips to the mechanic. The noise always stops when I get to the shop. I would love for them just to check the tranny and the flexplate, but I don't know what kind of cost I am looking at to inspect these parts. Does the tranny have to be removed to do this. Can these parts be checked when the pan is dropped to change the fluid? What should I do? The noise drives me nuts. I would just as soon sell the truck than to have to listen to it any longer.

Please help!!

THanks, Brad

I was probably responsible for several of those posts. I have never spoke to anyone else who actually found this problem on their Explorer. My mechanic says he has seen it on other vehicles, but not Explorers.

I was never able to check and see if it was cracking, I always got the failure and then found out what happened. This happened to me twice in four years. When I was digging through some of the paperwork that I got when I bought the truck I found a receipt from a garage that replaced it at 35K, which was well before I bought the truck.

I assume that the only way to really check it out is to pull the tranny out. Don't know what that would cost, but the fixes cost me about $800 each.

We appear to have the same thing. You'd think Ford would have a recall on this. If they only read this newsgroup........
