Poor AM Reception

Nov 18, 2003 2 Replies

The AM reception on my '98 with the premium radio is deteriorating. The static when I'm near power lines now drowns out the local stations. It's especially bad when it's raining.

Last year I was hit on the right and had to replace the right front fender.

Could the problem be ground related or corrosion around the antenna mount?

Sounds like water has found it's way into the antenna lead. Replace the lead and the problem will likely be gone.

You might want to check the antenna grounding. Sometimes when the fender is replaced the primer does not allow for a proper ground. At my RadioShack dealership we ran into that problem a lot. Either just corrosion in an older vehicle or one that has just came from the body shop.
