Engine Dies Unexpectedly

Hello All,

I wonder if anyone has experienced this problem. I have a 2000 EB with the

5.0L engine. The car has about 53,000 miles on it. Today I was sitting at a stop light at idle when all of a sudden the engine just dies. Starts right up and takes off with no problem. Didn't die again. I did notice the engine shutter, almost die, about 2 weeks ago. In each instance the motor had warmed to normal operating temperature.

Anybody had anything like this happen? Any ideas what would cause the motor to die just out of the blue?

Ant help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brad

You're right, any help would be appreciated..... what have you checked? Scanned codes? Any other symptoms? Anything else different?

Distinct possibilities include MAF sensor and EGR system.......

Thx for the reply Jim. Haven't check the codes. Will do that this week. No other symptoms. Engine seems to run just fine. Not sure what the MAF sensor is but I will dig into my manual and find out. Thx for the tip.

Over time, the MAF can gather a "fur coat"... sometimes hard to see with the naked eye (for me, anyway). Sensing elements should be shiny silver. Clean with brake cleaner and allow to air dry - this is good PM at the very least....

Autozone will do a OBDII check for free.

Thx Sauger...Not very familiar with the codes for the Explorer. I'll give Autozone a try.

If it happens only at idle, but the truck runs fine otherwise, it could be the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. It might need to be cleaned or replaced. It is usually the problem when it comes to rough/ no idle symptoms.

I agree that your problem may related to the IAC valve. Remove it and check for carbon buildup. Did you actually get a check engine light?

Nope. No check engine light at all. Just died with no other symptoms. Has run like a top since.
