Extended Service Plan???

I haven't replaced one yet on the current flavour of Exploder (I don't recall any of the other guys doing one either). I have my own opinion of extended warrantees and I wont bore you folks with what's been discussed. I will mention that you should read the conditions VERY CAREFULLY before signing the cheque.

I think of the extended warranty as an insurance policy. If I spend the $1000 and never need it I'm happy. If the transmission or engine blows and needs repair I'm glad I have the warranty.

How many years have you had comprehensive coverage on your car and never used it?

I've bought extended warranties on 3 explorers, a 94, 97 and 99. One of them I broke even. One I lost about $200. And on the other one I came out way ahead courtesy of a rebuilt transfer case and two weeks of a rental car.

Like a fool, I spent $1000 on one and never needed it.

Wish I had saved my money, but at the point of signing the deal I let them pressure me into it.

Heh. Getting the extended on my 98 EB was a great investment for me. Between 36 -60K miles, my extended warranty paid for: Replacement radio (display went out, dealer replaced). Two new rear wiper motors. Replacement brake light switch. New steering rack. Repair/replacement of corroded AC line causing loss of refrigerant. New antenna motor. Repair heater air blend door (this one alone was worth the cost of the warranty).

Although, each of these events had a $50 deductable, so it all cost me about $400 over the $850 extended warranty. I still

Was the service plan sold by Ford or an after market company?

Read the warranty CAREFULLY to see what is and what is not covered. Most of the extended warranty plans I've seen have a specific list of parts they will cover. If the part(s) that failed aren't on the list, you're SOL. If the contract doesn't have the list, call the warranty administrators and ask them to send you the list.

And even if they are on the list, expect to have to argue to get parts covered as they sometimes use the ususal ware clause.

Just checked my paperwork, and it is a "Ford ESP PremiumCARE." I purchased it from the dealer when I bought the truck new, and they did negotiate the price. At the time, I figured that there were so many things with this truck that COULD go wrong, and not being mechanically inclined, it was worth it to me.
