Re: How bad did I do?

I don't know how good or bad you did, but here's a couple places that give pricing info. You can also get what the dealer cost is from some sites though I have only found sites that you have to pay for that info.

Looks like you did pretty well. I also bought an 03 XLT over the weekend. The sticker was 35k, and my dealer offered me the vehicle for $31, which was just a few hundred dollars over invoice. I was fine with them making a few dollars, since they had to order the explorer from the factory for me. I also got 0% interest, and $1000 from Ford Financing, because I was finishing up a lease and buying a new Explorer at the same time.

The price you paid is fine. But it is not uncommon to get invoice, especially if they order it for you, since they then get the full benefit of the holdback because the vehicle isn't floor planned at all.

As far as Richard, it is hard to tell, since we don't know all the specifics on the vehicle you purchased, As someone else suggested, you can go to Edmunds or Kelly Blue Book and get all the numbers - invoice vs sticker - for yourself.

The dealer has to order all of their Explorers, even those for floor stock. I don't mind the dealer making a few bucks, but they do that through the back shop. They also get a holdback, which isn't reflected in the "invoice". And the "invoice" isn't often the actual price the dealer pays, either; promotions often lower the dealer's actual cost to several thousands of dollars under the "invoice" price. Just something to think about the next time a salesman cries poverty.
