Rear End Whine - How Common Is It?

I am considering buying a new Explorer this fall as my '99 is getting a little long in the tooth. I keep reading comments about rear end whine in these vehicles and know that I could not put up with it. I am wondering if this whine problem is rare or if it happens to most new Explorers. From the sound of the comments in this news group, Ford is unable to fix the problem.

I recently rented an SUV from Hertz hoping to get a chance to put some mileage on a new Explorer so I could get a feel for the differences from my '99. However, Hertz (owned by Ford!!!) had no Explorers and gave me a 4Runner. I had previously looked at the 4Runner but never really considered buying one. This rental changed my mind about that

- I really enjoyed driving it. We put about 1,500 miles on it, so got a really good test drive.

I am taking another trip soon and have reserved another SUV from Hertz. Hopefully I will get a chance to try the Explorer this time.

So, do all 2002, 2003 and 2004 Explorers have a whine problem or just a few of them?

I just traded my almost-at-lease-end 2002 EB two weeks ago. I had only a DPFE valve go bad (and, even then, it only caused minor engine hesitation at part-throttle). I never had any other problem, and mine was one of the first '02s made---not bad for an all-new design.

If it weren't for the mileage, I would have leased another EB or Limited.

My Friend, I have a 2002 explorer I think the car would be good only during the first year, or the first 40000 km. I heard of the rear whine and thought I was lucky never had it, Just at

42000 km service, it started to come. The dealer syas it is normal and due to the tires. You can read my post " A few issues with Ford Explorer 2002, Can somebody..."

I swear every dealer has a different idea on the problem. I think the tire theory is B.S. because I've gone through three sets of diff. tires and the sound still exists!!! I think its something bigger..

Hey Danjerguy- do you have a limited slip on that 02?

I think I recall hearing about that being part of it..

Hey some dude. Sorry, what do you mean by limited slip? Do you mean that car shouldn't skid or minimum?

limited slip differential....I don't know anything except they mentioned it..see my other thread response...its going to piss you off..it pissed me off :(
