replacing the horn - 97 explorer

There are two horns, high and low tone They are mounted on a bracket under the front left fender, approximately under the battery.

Remove a few fender apron bolts near the front and pull back the plastic apron You will be able to see the horns now If it's something obvious, like a corroded terminal or other bad connection you may be able to fix it in-situ. Otherwise you will have to remove the mounting bracket The bolt for this is under the battery, near the front of the vehicle You may have to remove the battery and tray to access the bolt When you have the horns out, you will see an adjusting screw for each horn, probably covered by a sealant You could try adjusting each screw to improve the sound, but if this doesn't work, there is no other adjustment, just replace the pair

When you re-install them, make sure the horn opening is pointing slighly downwards so that any moisture will drain out.
