Rotor removal

I tried to replace the front rotors on my 1999 4wd explorer this morning.

I removed caliper and the caliper mounting bracket with little trouble but the rotors will not come off the hub. Seems they are rusted on?

Tried some liquid wrench and tapping with a hammer and wood block but no luck.

Is there a puller made for this? Any Help is appreciated.

Thanks, Lou

You didn't comment about the state of the roller bearings. To get the rotor off you have to remove the bearings first.

Louis, soak the rotors thoroughly with a good quality catalyst, especially close to the hub and around the wheel studs. My favorite catalyst is PB-Blaster. Liquid Wrench is O.K., its better then the WD stuff, but I prefer PB-Blaster for the tough jobs! Try turning the hubs so the catalyst has a chance to seep around the entire center of the rotor.

If you cannot get them to crack loose with the catalyst and a heavy ball-peen hammer, try heat. Concentrate the heat in a circular pattern around the wheel studs. Don't expect to reuse the rotors, and if the front's are this bad wait till you get to the rears :o)

Good luck,

Steven

He's probably talking about a four, or all wheel drive ... ???

If not, then ... Uh... yeah... pull the big nut in the middle of the rotor :)

There are 53,000 miles on the truck, it's a 1999 6 sohc with 4WD.

The repair Manuel I have says the rotors should come off after the caliper bracket is removed. No mention of bearing removal.
